How haunted is New Orleans?

All Hallow’s Eve, the night before All Saints Day, is traditionally known as a time when spirits can make contact with the physical world and when magic is most potent. In the United States, the best city for magic and spirits is undoubtedly New Orleans. Because the City is built below sea level, all burials must take place above ground – leading to both intriguing cemetery architecture and a host of ghostly tales.

Any tour of haunted sites in New Orleans should include the Hotel Maison de Ville as several of the Audubon Cottages are said to be haunted. Cottage 4 is inhabited by an old soldier in military dress who prefers country music while a mysterious lady wanders the courtyard, drifting in and out of the courtyard rooms.

Ghost Hunter University is holding special weekend sessions at the Hotel Maison de Ville on February 22 – 23, 2008, to allow would-be ghost hunters to test out their skills and equipment in a target-rich environment.

Outside the Hotel, the City of New Orleans offers a variety of tours and events to celebrate Halloween, including a revival of the infamous Coven Balls celebrated by Anne Rice’s Vampire Lestat Fan Club. The Witching Hour Ball is the reincarnation of that event and will be held on Friday October 26, at The Howling Wolf.

The 19th annual Ghostly Galavant will tour one of New Orlean’s oldest above ground cemeteries – St. Louis No. 2. Home to some of the city’s most elaborate tombs, the cemetery offers Greek Revival, Baroque, Egyptian, and Gothic tombs side by side. Hear the stories of the residents of these beautiful and mysterious vaults.
