New Orleans’ Summer Music Highlights include:

The Essence Music Festival

This annual event takes place over the Fourth of July weekend at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. This year’s line-up of artists includes Mary J. Blige, LL Cool J, Morris Day, Maze, Jill Scott, Chris Brown, Patti LaBelle and Kanye West, as well as comedian Chris Rock. Daytime festival activities include an art and craft marketplace, a showcase of New Orleans cuisine, and a book fair with author signings. Tickets range from $56 - $165 per day and are available through TicketMaster.

Preservation Hall

If jazz is a religion, then Preservation Hall is its temple. Music lovers travel from all over the world to pay homage at this sanctuary for New Orleans Jazz. The hall hosts an enviable lineup of live music, including veteran jazz performers and rising artists. Check the Preservation Hall Calendar for upcoming shows.

Tipitinas

Put on your dancing shoes and head uptown to the perpetual party at Tipitinas. This lively venue is genre-agnostic, and has hosted live acts from the Funky Meters to Yo La Tengo. Established in 1977, the club is dedicated to New Orleans R&B musician Henry Roeland Byrd (a.k.a. Professor Longhair), and is named after one of his compositions. Check the Tipitina’s calendar for upcoming performances.

Satchmo Summerfest

As July slips into August, the city holds its annual celebration of the life and music of Louis Armstrong. Held at the Old US Mint, the festival combines traditional and contemporary jazz acts. The festival also includes children’s programs (including puppet shows and storytelling) as well as artist workshops, interviews, and discussions. View the complete program at the Satchmo Summerfest site.
